Julia e Karoline WalchFounders

Moncalisse emerged from the vision of sisters Julia and Karoline Walch, who boldly chose to pursue an independent path from their family’s historic estate, Elena Walch. Their journey began in 2016 on the slopes of Mount Calisio, 600 meters above sea level, a site remarkable for its geology and microclimate and ideal for crafting distinctive, authentic Trentodoc wines. In Seregnano, Julia and Karoline fell in love with the land and decided to establish their own estate, devoted exclusively to the production of exceptional sparkling wines. “We immediately recognized in this place an extraordinary terroir for creating Trentodoc wines with remarkable aging potential,” they reflect. The discovery of ancient symbolic rock engravings known as the Coppelle in the Moncalisse vineyard attests to the profound significance of this site since ancient times. Today, this legacy inspires their relationship with time and the land, reinterpreted through a contemporary lens.

Stefano BolognaniHead Winemaker

Stefano Bolognani is Moncalisse’s head winemaker, deeply connected to the land and to the very essence of Trentodoc. With passion, expertise, and experience, he transforms the excellence of the local grape varieties into wines with a bold, authentic character, where minerality and salinity blend with a delicate, vibrant freshness, turning the power of the terroir into sparkling wines of exceptional finesse. Together with Julia and Karoline, Stefano forms a visionary team, guided by Odilon de Varine, whose role as facilitator and mentor helps drive a shared dialogue that opens new horizons for the future of Trentodoc.

Odilon de VarineMentor and Facilitator

Odilon de Varine, a renowned winemaker from the Champagne region, brings the expertise of France’s great terroirs to Moncalisse, offering a fresh and innovative perspective. “Being part of the creation of Moncalisse wasn’t really a challenge. The foundations were already strong, from the vineyard with its old vines, essential for giving the wine depth and complexity, to the experienced winemaker working alongside younger plantings, to the family and the history. It was, above all, an opportunity to share a new and exciting adventure with Julia, Karoline, and Stefano.”

Time, terroir, and craftsmanship

VISION

Moncalisse is deeply committed to crafting unique Trentodoc wines using the traditional method, wines that embody longevity, identity, and true craftsmanship.

The estate produces exclusively Riserva wines, aged extensively on the lees, reflecting a dedication to time, care, and quality. These are structured, enduring, and distinctive sparkling wines, shaped by the terroir of Mount Calisio. High-altitude vineyards, pronounced temperature swings, and mineral-rich soils give the wines their freshness, finesse, and minerality.

Guided by an artisanal and sustainable approach and working solely with estate-owned vineyards, Moncalisse combines technical expertise, experience, and respect for the environment, transforming each cuvée into an authentic expression of the terroir.

TRENTODOC

Terroir, identity, and history

At the foot of Mount Calisio, in Seregnano, the land tells a story spanning millennia. Metamorphic and porphyry soils, layered limestone shaped by marine sediments and glaciers, phyllites, and quartz give vine roots exceptional depth, freshness, and minerality.
The Moncalisse vineyard is also rich in history and charm. Among its rocks are the Coppelle, ancient symbolic carvings dating back to the Bronze and Iron Ages, associated with sacred rites and esoteric symbols. These millennia-old markings give the site a unique cultural and symbolic aura, a testament to a land celebrated as extraordinary since ancient times.

SUSTAINABILITY

In the vineyards of Moncalisse, careful soil management and the protection of biodiversity reflect a love and respect for nature, where every choice highlights the uniqueness of the terroir. Sowing legumes, grass cover, composting, and mulching encourage deep roots, natural fertility, and minerality in the wines, while targeted drip irrigation makes optimal use of water.

The winery, mostly underground and designed in harmony with Mount Calisio, blends seamlessly into the landscape. Its shapes echo the rolling hills and the ancient Coppelle, engaging with the rocks and geology without disturbing the natural balance. At Moncalisse, sustainability extends to every dimension of the estate, from the vineyards to the landscape to the cultural heritage. Technique, care, and respect for the land combine to celebrate and preserve the legacy and beauty of this place.
